Have you ever wondered what it was like to be an Air Traffic Controller. And a pilot. I have been a pilot since 1977 and an air traffic controller for 25 years. You might think it would be easy to be a controller with the flying back ground. Well it is in a lot of ways. But it is very difficult in many other ways. You see, most controllers are not pilots and they know very little about flying an airplane. As an experienced pilot it is sometimes difficult to watch what unfolds in the ATC system. Things could often times run much smoother. Imagine they are doing a job that is very important to the safety of your flight but know little about how to fly that plane or what you need. They have no idea what you are seeing from the cockpit. They make a lot of decisions with a narrow corridor of thinking. Whatever makes their job easier. It's unique and there aren't many similie's but it would be like giving someone directions in a city you have never been to before. Most controller care a lot about you, and their job is safety, it's just that they only have half the picture. Anyway, I have the priviledge of having a picture of both sides of the mic. It is a good feeling to know exactly what is going on at the other end of that mike when things get exciting. So besides providing safe thorough flight instruction I also bring a unique perspective to the learning environment. The ATC perspective. Good luck with you Flight Training.
