Staff Qualification
Gordon Bakke MATA's Executive Director, and his wife Elaine spent 22 years serving as missionary pilot/mechanic and nurse for Mukinge Mission Hospital Nurses Training School in Zambia, Africa with Evangelical Fellowship (now SIM). They moved back to the USA in April 1989. Since then, Gordon has made short-term trip to Africa in 1995, 1998 and 2002.
Gordon started with MATA (Mission Aviation Training Academy) about a year after Pastor Mike Crowell began the organization, which was October 1998. Gordon has spent the past 7 summers serving in Alaska at Kako Retreat Center, bringing kids to and from Bible Camp.
Gary Elliott graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy and served 20 years, mostly as a fighter pilot. After retiring, he and his wife Stacie trained with New Tribes Mission (NTM) for 2 years, then served 8 years in the Philippines. Gary serviced missionaries in remote jungle and mountain areas, operating a Cessna 180 and 185 from short, steep, narrow grass airstrips on the sides of mountains and in river valleys. Although not an A&P mechanic, he had lots of hands-on experience inspecting and maintaining the aircraft, working under the supervision of NTM Aviation's Chief Mechanic in the Philippines.
While on furlough in 2001-2002, he taught in Central Washington University's Flight Technology Program, providing classroom instruction in subjects varying from private pilot groundschool and meteorology to advanced aircraft systems. Gary has over 3,600 hours total time, over 1,000 hours of instructor pilot time, and holds CFI and CFII ratings in single-engine airplanes.
More About Us
MATA is unique in that we specifically train pilots that are interested in serving in mission aviation around the globe. Our staff has years of missionary experience to pass onto it's students. MATA also is flexable with meeting the students needs as to where they might be in their flight training process. MATA offers it's students connections to sending mission organizations.
